Posidonia oceanica covers a known area of 1,2 million hectares. However, the lack of relevant data is still important in some part of the Mediterranean Basin.
On the Balearic coasts the oldest living being in the world, with an estimated age of 100,000 years, belonging to a Posidonia meadow (between the islands of Formentera and Ibiza) can be found.
