THE MEDITERRANEAN POSIDONIA NETWORK AT THE COP23 MED BARCELONA CONVENTION

Side Event in Portorož, Slovenija | 7th December 2023

Yesterday was the launching of an innovative initiative at #COP23Med #BarcelonaConvention, with the goal of safeguarding #Posidonia in the Mediterranean!

The #BarcelonaConvention, along with its seven Protocols adopted under the #MediterraneanActionPlan (MAP), serves as the primary legally binding regional multilateral environmental agreement for the Mediterranean. Under the SPA/BD protocol focusing on special protected areas in the Mediterranean, the Mediterranean Posidonia Network (MPN) and the UNEP/MAP – SPA/RAC shared their roadmap and collaborative efforts regarding the regional action plan for marine vegetation preservation.

A special thanks to Atef Ouerghi, from the SPA/RAC Secretariat and Lavrentios Vasiliades, SPA/RAC Focal Point for Cyprus, Fisheries and Marine Research Officer for exchanges on SPA/RAC partnerships to strengthen national strategies for the protection of posidonia.

The side event was also an opportunity to present the conclusions of the seminar on #bluecarbon financing mechanisms held in Marseille this last November.

Another special thanks to Alessio Satta, from the WWF‘s Mediterranean Marine Initiative Direction, who presented the main findings.

🎯The current priority is to secure #€50million by 2025 to initiate comprehensive actions across the entire Mediterranean Sea.
